in the camp
Western relief organizations work with local staff wherever possible.
The Poet
A lot of people in the camp are
from the Syrian countryside.
But the teacher Alan Esber (26)
is from Damascus city.
Alan is actually a
professional poet.
Today he taught pupils that rainbows aren’t miracles but the result of sunlight refracting and dispersing in water droplets.
The school where Alan works
has 18 classrooms.
The teachers earn 600
dollars a month.
400 from the Iraqi government
and 200 from the UNHCR.
But the teachers haven't been
paid for four months.
